Silvered and Gilt Bronze Antique French Figural Sculpture of a Couple by Devaulx

About the Item

Depicting a moment of tender intimacy, this antique French bronze sculpture shows a couple in a moment of calm repose. Dressed in typical Classical Roman attire, the man sits, holding a tablet in front of him, which he gazes down at. The woman, also dressed in the manner of Classical Rome, leans on her husband affectionately, with her head tilted towards her beloved in a gesture of interest and understanding. The two figures are set on an oval shaped plinth made of ormolu (gilt bronze). The plinth is signed, 'Albinet & Coulon Editrs', the mark of a Parisian foundry that flourished in the second half of the 19th Century. François Théodore Devaulx, (French, 1808-1870), worked for Albinet & Coulon Editrs, and was responsible for producing some of the foundry's most impressive works, such as the present example. The high level of detail apparent in this bronze figural group is typical of Devaulx's work, as is the naturalistic rendering of the figures and their poses. The quality, subject matter and prestigious maker of this stunning bronze sculpture makes the work a truly impressive one.
