Antique Bronze Sculpture "Trinkender Frauenakt" by Victor Heinrich Seifert

US$2,975

About

Victor Heinrich Seifert (German, 1870-1953) "Trinkender Frauenakt" Germany, circa 1890-1900, signed "V. Seifert AKT Ges Gladenbeck Berlin" Victor Heinrich Seifert was born in Vienna in 1870 and was affluent and productive sculptor working in Germany until his death in Berlin, 1953. A pupil of d’E. Herter, L. Manzel and P. Breuer, he was a sculptor of statues, monuments and military subjects. This famous work is one of his most successful subjects, a simply magnetic work of art executed in bronze - the figure of this young woman is graceful and dignified, softly holding the gilt bowl of water while holding her lips softly to the brim for a sip. She is a statement of naturalism, chaste in demeanor, her diffident pose and gentle aspect show an inner strength and confidence. The patina is complex and ranging from nearly black to brilliant bronze with flecks of gold. A cast of this sculpture is represented in the extensive collection of his works at the Museum of Leipzig in Germany. Around the base is the signature of Seifert as well as the signature of the Gladenbeck foundry; the AKT and absence of "Sohn" in the inscription place this cast at the turn of the century. It is in remarkable condition, well preserved with light patina wear throughout, exquisitely detailed and of incredible quality. The Gladenbeck Foundry: Founded by Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck in 1851, the Gladenbeck Foundry was relocated to Berlin, Germany in 1857. In 1888 it became the Aktien-Gesellschaft H. Gladenbeck und Sohn under the directorship of Hermann Gladenbeck and sons Oskar and Alfred. It was operated run by various family members and shareholders until the first quarter of the 20th century. For further reading, see "Encyclopedia of Bronzes, Sculptors & Founders, vol 4", 1800-1930, Harold Berman, Abage Chicago, 1980. Measurements: 15” H (including base), 11 5/8” H (figure only), base 3 1/8” W x 3 1/8” D Condition report: Minor little chips to the marble base. Some handling wear to patina on her left proper hip, very faint scratches to one side of her back, tiny spots of patina loss under both knees. An exceptional presentation with original patina glowing throughout.
