19th Century French Bronze Statue of Young Henri IV

About the Item

This 19th century French Renaissance bronze statue of a Young Henri IV is after Baron F. J. Bosio (French, 1768-1845) and indicates a representation of the 16th century period. It is an excellent work that clearly displays the talents of the sculptor, handsomely displaying a young man who was on his way to becoming a renowned swordsman and King. Henry IV, also known by the epithet Good King Henry or Henry the Great, was King of Navarre from 1572 and King of France from 1589 to 1610. He was the first monarch of France from the House of Bourbon, a cadet branch of the Capetian dynasty. The work is set on a luxuriously veined dark green marble base. This Bronze on Italian Marble Base was probably cast by Barbedienne ~ one of the best French metalworkers and manufacturers, well known as a top bronze foundry. In a troubadour style unusual for Bosio, the statuette of Henri IV had a great success throughout the 19th century. After the plaster of the Salon of 1822, Bosio executed two marbles, one for the castle of Versailles and another for the castle of Pau. A silver cast of this statue by Charles-Nicolas Odiot is now preserved in the Louvre. circa 1890s Measures 28H x 9W x 9D (Provenance: Private Collection, Paris).

Pair 19th Century French bronze statues by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) are exemplary examples of the glorification of the simple rural life celebrated by artists in France during the Belle Epoque. A distinctive departure from rendering affluent families and lifestyles as dictated by the many patrons of art over the centuries, this informal movement gave a glimpse into the lives of everyday people. In this example, we have two young maidens, one carrying a bundle over her shoulder and a basket in her left hand, while the other totes a basket over her shoulder and a couple of protesting chickens in her right hand! Each maiden is modestly dressed...
