19th Century Bronze Statue of Esmeralda, by Marioton

About the Item

A fine quality 19th century patinated bronze statue of Esmeralda. Esmeralda, born Agnès, is a fictional character in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. She is a French Roma girl. She constantly attracts men with her seductive dances, and is rarely seen without her clever goat Djali. She is around 16 years old and has a kind and generous heart. Eugène Marioton, born in Paris on April 7, 1857, was a French sculptor working primarily in the medium of bronze. His works follow the traditions of Neoclassicism, consisting of small, cast bronze sculptures of historic French leaders as well as ancient Greek and Roman figures. He participated regularly in the Society of French artists, jurying the sculpture section of the salon in 1905. Before his death in 1933, Marioton received several accolades for his work, including a prize from the Society of Fine Arts and a young artist grant from the General Council of the Seine in 1884.
