"Peruvian Male in Traditional Headdress, " Art Deco Sculpture

About the Item

Superbly carved and visually striking, this life-size depiction of a Peruvian man in a traditional knitted headdress is a superb example of stylized Art Deco sculpture, as well as the fascination that American artists had in native cultures and costumes around the world. Carved from a gorgeous block of mahogany, the sculptor captured the high cheekbones, full lips and deep planes of his subject's face, as well as the patterning of the headdress, almost proto-Art Deco in its geometry.

A remarkable depiction of a strong, muscled nude male figure bent over in a monumental effort to move a large stone, this sculpture was made by the Hungarian-American sculptor Henry Schoenbauer. By the 1920s, many sculptors had created some version of "Man Against Nature," typically a an exaggeratedly strong male figure, often nude, working to lift a rock, pull a rope, or labor against impossible odds.
