About the Item

We are fortunate to have the opportunity to represent a new and emerging talent, Ivan Palmer. He has worked with some of the art world's great luminaries as you will read in his artist statement below. These are his first works to be exhibited and I think you will understand why we are excited as they are wonderful works. This is a Artist's Proof and is titled "3 AM". It is signed Ivan Palmer AP 2010. The artist statement below was written by Ivan; My name is Ivan Palmer. I am a sculptor living and working in Newburgh N.Y. Born in southern Mexico, I spent most of my formative years in Israel. As the only child of an artist and art teacher, my art has always been a focal point in my life. I Graduated from Purchase College School of Art + Design, receiving a BFA in sculpture/ 3-D media in 2003. I have worked as a studio assistant and an art fabricator / finisher and completed work for some of the most recognizable names in contemporary art today, such as; Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Tom Otterness, Richard Prince, Michele Oka Doner, Julian Schnabel, Joel Shapiro, George Condo, Ashley Bickerton, Do-Ho Suh as well as many other artists and public monuments. I have inspired and influenced by the many artists I have worked for. I try and create new techniques in Craft while striving for with the highest level of quality. I use my life experiences and technical training to further my own Art. My work is primarily built from the depths of regret, prejudicial impressions, misunderstanding and acceptance of our own societal value. I balance my skill of Craft and the conceptual fiber of my work. I create dialog between the sculpture and the viewer, questioning the viewer’s prejudices and the primal human need of expression. . My objective is to evoke thought if not emotionally move the viewer while questioning intent as well as assertions of first impressions. It creates a dialog of weather it is asking or giving, religious or heathenish, while also juxtaposing its vulnerability and it’s Insusceptibility.

  • Fred Schumm Bronze Noted NJ Artist Signed, Dated 1989
    Located in Palm Springs, CA
A great bronze wonderfully patinated and mounted on a slate base. It is signed Schumacher and dated 1989. We were lucky to acquire a number of this artist's works. From a 2012 article the following provides some insight into the artist: Gloucester TWP, Camden County College’s Marlin Gallery will present works by the late Cherry Hill sculptor Frederick Schumm in the show “Retrospective” starting March 21. Schumm was a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Driven by an interest in whittling and sculpture, he used G.I. Bill funds to develop his talents with study at the Colorado Institute of Fine Arts. In the early 1960s, he developed an original method for casting small bronzes at the same time that he was designing and helping to construct a sculptural playground for the Colorado Springs Parks Department. The playground pieces were featured in "Woman’s Day" magazine and can viewed online at you tube His bronze-casting innovations led to his receipt of a Fulbright Scholarship and two years of study in Florence, Italy. Upon his return to the United States, Schumm lived in New York...

This very fine life-size patinated bronze figural torchere modeled as a classically clad female musician holding a mandolin and a torch. This symbolic representation of Music, falls within Coutan’s allegorical work. The sculpture stands on a period carved wood pedestal. Inscribed on base: Coutan, Thiébaut Frères, Fondeurs. Total Height: 101″ (259 cm) Bronze height: 67″ (170.1 cm) Pedestal Height: 34" (86.3 cm) Jules-Félix Coutan (22 September 1848 – 23 February 1939) is considered to be one of the most gifted French sculptors and designers of the 19th and early 20th centuries Coutan studied under the renowned Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872; after his return to Paris he executed the fountain group France Bearing the Torch of Civilization for the Exposition Universelle (1889), one of the two prominent sculptural commissions for the Exposition grounds.[1] Later he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1900, where he expressed his disdain for the researches of Rodin— fumiste—[2] and the Impressionist sculptors who followed him. Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3] Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4] Among Coutan's students were Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Raymond Delamarre...
