Pair of Addorsed 18th Century French Terracotta Architectural Fragments

US$2,950per set

About

This pair of rams heads set with swags issuing from their horns are French and from the reign of Louis XVI, circa 1780. Following in the neoclassical style prominent at the time this pair of heads made of terracotta are well modeled and show fur and facial features in great detail. They would have been a part of a larger entablature incorporating a full swag from one head thickening down to the center and back up to the other head. There might have been a window or further decorative elements included in the panel along with large flat plans to block out the design but these are now lost in time with just these two dramatic fragments remaining. The backs never intended to be seen are rough and filled with grouting and colored to match the terracotta and set on museum-style stands to best show off the form of the rams heads, horns and laurel swags. The surface has as one would expect much accumulation of surface but this heightens the effect of the fragments giving them ancient feel most effectively speaking to the design ideals they originate from. They have been set at slightly different heights creating drama and visual play set on the modern black painted metal stands.
