Antique French Bronze Sculpture after Houdon

About the Item

This beautiful patinated bronze figure is titled 'Diana Chasseresse', or 'Diana Huntress', and depicts the Roman goddess Diana, goddess of hunting. It replicates an important work of French Neoclassicism in the late 18th Century, by Jean-Antoine Houdon (French, 1741-1828). Houdon debuted a plaster version of this sculpture in 1777, before going on to make several versions in bronze. At the time of being premiered, the sculpture was controversial, since it was only thought proper to depict Diana nude when bathing, and not when hunting. Here the nude Diana is shown, delicately poised and holding a quiver of arrows in her hand. The sculpture is considered one of the finest works of French Neoclassicism, on account of the figure's movement, elegance, proportionality and serenity. This figure measures 90cm (or 35 inches) in height, and is supported by a circular, naturalistic base which is signed 'HOUDON'. The base is also set on a red marble socle, which is mounted with beading and a foliate frieze in gilt bronze.

French sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) is the inspiration for this beautiful, sumptuous mantel clock. His clock, crafted in the late 18th Century and now on display at the Louvre Museum, caused such a stir when it was exhibited over 100 years later, at the Great Exhibition in Paris in 1900 that one reviewer claimed that it "attracted so much admiration from the crowds gathered around that the pressure was sufficient at times to endanger its safety." As well as this famed 'Three Graces...

This pair of Limoges porcelain bisque busts featuring Brongniart children derives from a masterpiece of children's portraiture by Jean-Antoine Houdon (French, 1741-1828): the busts of Louise (1772-1845) and her brother Alexandre (1770-1847), children of the famous architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart. Crafted of terracotta, Houdon's busts were presented at the Salon of 1777. Very popular, the two busts were reproduced in bisque, terracotta, marble and bronze.
