Pair of Large Scale Swiss Black Forest Carved Couchant Hunting Dogs

About the Item

Loyal and watchful, this fabulous pair of Black Forest hounds, of excellent size and quality, are patiently waiting for their new home. The Black Forest carvers used wood with a good density and little or no grain, a wood that could be carved without splitting or fracturing like linden (lime), European pear and maple. Valued for their scenting prowess, speed and stamina and as with fine horses and falcons, hounds like these were long held in high esteem, seen as a most valuable and prestigious commodity, vital to the Royal pursuit of hunting and down the Ages often presented as a regal gift from one monarch to another. Although often believed to have originated in Bavaria, Black Forest wood carving was actually begun in Brienz, Switzerland, the work born out of a time of a terrible period of famine in 1816. In an attempt to create employment and commerce, the Swiss government took steps to encourage local timber merchants to liaise with craftsmen of the region and thus start the production of a quite sophisticated art form. Spurred on by the collecting craze of the Grand Tour, this type of naturalistic carving grew in popularity very quickly. Self-taught from the outset, many carvers were to attain a level of skill which created a lasting legacy. Black Forest carvings usually focus on the animals of the woods, especially bears, also well-observed trees and plant life, often in a variety of items including clocks, ink wells and stick stands.
