“Fighting Eagles” Modernist Art Deco Bronze Sculpture by Maximilien Fiot & Susse

About the Item

"COMBAT D'AIGLES AU-DESSUS D'UN ROCHER" (EAGLES FIGHTING ON A ROCK) BY MAXIMILIEN FIOT (FRENCH, 1886-1953) Signed in cast "M. Fiot"; foundry pastille and inscribed "Susse Fres Ed Paris", cold stamped "BRONZE" Item # 002SBP29A A powerful work that is full of energy and movement, this work in the modernist taste by Maximilien Fiot perhaps shows his technical ability for capturing complex subjects better than any other single work in his oeuvre. Balanced entirely on a single wing that has brushed against a projecting rock, the pair of eagles hang suspended in a fierce combat, each with razor sharp talons clamoring for a hold on the other. It is a Fine representation of the beauty and majesty of this gorgeous bird. The rock is signed "M. Fiot" in his typical script and it retains the foundry pastille for Susse along with the typical "Susse Fres Ed. Paris" stylus inscription from the original mold. It is finished in a pleasing reddish-brown patina with hints of the warm golden bronze hue coming through. Born in Grand-Pressigny on January 22nd of 1886, Maximilien Fiot studied under the sculptor Prosper Lecourtier (French, 1855-1924). An animalier in the modernist taste, he regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français, where he eventually became an associate member. He was awarded a third class medal in 1911 and a second class medal in 1923. Much of his work was cast by Susse Frères and his work was included in their gallery Animalier exhibition of 1925. • French Modernism Bronze Sculpture “Greyhound & Cat” by Ary Bitter & Susse
    By Ary Bitter
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
ARY JEAN LÉON BITTER French, 1883-1973 The Greyhound and The Cat Lost-wax cast and patinated bronze signed in base "ary Bitter" and sealed with Susse cachet, signed in cast "cire purdue", signed "Susse Frs. Ets. Paris" Item # 304LJP22P A very scarce example of Bitter's work, this fluid and beautifully captured model depicts of a showdown between a greyhound and a household cat. The freshness of the mold it was captured from is self-evident with a nearly total absence of any notable cold-tooling throughout the surfaces. The signature is sharp to the touch, raised as if Bitter's stylus has only just shaped the wax of the model it was cast from. The untouched original surface patina is brilliant with a chaotic interplay of colors from vivid verdigris to autumnal browns and oranges. Edited by the house of Susse and cast with the lost-wax method. • Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
PAUL PHILIPPE Polish/French, 1870-1930 "Mischievous" Polychromed gilt bronze over original marble base signed in cast "P. PHILIPPE" signed in cast "i9.R / France" with foundry seal of A.G. Paris Item # 212MPH15S An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work. ARTIST Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia. Fiot’s parents lived in Paris, however, his mother returned to his father’s native Pressigny, Touraine, to give birth to him. His father’s occupation is not known, but it is probable that he came from a line of modest artists. Fiot began an apprenticeship under the sculptor Prosper Lecourtier, who in turn had studied under Fremiet and had pursued a career as an Animalier sculptor, dogs being his principal speciality. Appropriately, for his first appearance at the ‘Salon des Artistes Français’ in 1904, Fiot exhibited a plaster dog...
