Bernard Langlais Terracotta Lion
About the Item
Small terracotta lion sculpture by prolific artist, Bernard Langlais. This example is uncommon for Langlais, whose avid exploration of the animal kingdom was largely dominated by his carved-wood sculptures. Although, he worked in all mediums, his ceramic works are less recognized. This striking lion in glazed terracotta boasts hand-painted, red eyes and a coin slot for decorative purposes; there is no way of retrieving the coins. Minor wear / loss to black glaze. Otherwise, in excellent, original condition.
'BL.' etched initials to paw (the B is partial).
Originally, from a private Maine collection of Langlais' work acquired directly from the estate.
