Art Deco French Sculpture of Two Fish in Craquelé Porcelain

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Nice and pleasant porcelain sculpture representing two fishes swimming together; with the extension of the caudal fin of the fish in the foreground has been obtained a solid base that supports stably the whole sculpture; the design is essential with strong and marked lines, on the whole pleasantly elegant and proportioned; the sculpture was obtained using the very old technique of "lost wax" which consists in creating a wax model and using it to make a clay mold, on which two holes are made, one at the top and the other at the bottom, the wax is poured out by heating it and at this point the molten metal or liquid porcelain is poured in its place, thus obtaining a model identical to the wax one (see example photo); the object was also customized using the old "craquelé" technique on the porcelain. The "craquelure" in painting is the dense network of cracks that forms on the surface of paintings, it is often used to determine the age of a painting and then discover any fakes. The decoration industry, towards the end of the eighteenth century, when the tendency was to decorate with objects with a strong antique appeal, invented the aging technique of craquelure to propose it in the realization of the most varied objects and materials such as ceramics, porcelain, and glass. The product was produced between 1930 and 1935 in France in a small workshop in the Marais area, one of the richest neighborhoods in Paris, where the stores of artists and craftsmen were the soul of the neighborhood itself. Our fish tell us a little piece of history, they are highly decorative and can be placed with any type of furniture. Measures width cm.36, depth cm.14, height cm.38. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

  • Saint Clement Style France Art Deco Statue Pair White Craquelè Ceramic Panters
    By Saint-Clément

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Beautiful Art Deco sculpture in white craquelé ceramic depicting a pair of panthers; the noble animals are depicted walking, with their plush stride, in the tall grass in a calm and relaxed attitude; the powerful muscles of the beasts are relaxed, but the representation is always charged with strength and pride, a classic example of the Art Deco style that exalted in its artistic expressions the forms, strength, and power of both humans and animals. The object features very distinctive workmanship: the piece of raw ceramic was first molded into its final soft and elegant form, then fired at about 1000° C, then an ancient technique was used by applying "crystalline" (a transparent vitreous coating) with an ox brush; then distributed, again with a brush, white glaze over the entire body of the panthers; the glazing stage requires a lot of skill, as the glaze must be evenly deposited on the surface of the object, at which point, very quickly, to fix the glaze, the piece was put into the kiln between 920 and 940 degrees for the final firing. By looking at the underside we can better understand this technique. The panther pair...

  • Art Nouveau Patinated Plaster of Paris Sculpture by Joseph Zomers Belgium
    By Joseph Zomers
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Statuette of a naked woman sitting in patinated plaster of Paris; plaster of Paris, is a very resistant material, used since ancient times, it was used by the ancient Egyptians as a binder in the construction of the pyramids and is used in sculpture for its strength, the name is linked to the ancient quarries of Montmartre in Paris; the statue is a work of the famous Belgian sculptor and bronze artist Joseph Zomers which he executed between 1915 and 1920 and whose signature is on the pedestal. The woman is represented posing with ill-concealed malice and shows without reticence her body with a thin erotic veil, the artist has not executed the face precisely to accentuate a mysterious charm; it is a figure of harmonic proportions that takes into greater consideration the erotic connotations, however, a refined and elegant eroticism that presents itself in a courteous manner, subtle and suggestive but at the same time provocative and irreverent; the woman, in her most intimate dimension, as a naked presence, defenseless but seductive, becomes the embodiment of the poetic essence of the artist, the emblematic figure of his aesthetics. It is an object in perfect Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil), in fact, many artists of this current used eroticism as their work, portraying women as ethereal and fatal beings, letting themselves be inspired by "le beau sexe" thanks to their naked forms, soft and seductive. Joseph Zomers was born in Liege in Belgium in 1895 and died in 1928; he studied art in Maredsous (Belgium), many of his works are permanently exhibited at the Musèe de Liège; Zomers is well known for his public monument "Tchantchès" in Liege. This great work in stone and bronze is located in the Otremeuse district in Rue Pont-Saint-Nicolas; designed by Joseph Zomers, the statue represents a "hiercheuse", the name was given to the women who pulled the carts in the mine, a tribute to those valiant young people vilified and victims of the exploitation of women's labor, the woman holds aloft the puppet of Tchantchès. Tchantchès is the name given to a puppet that appeared in Liège in the 19th century. The popular character, Tchantchès became over time the archetype of the goodman of Liege, witty and good-natured, wise and subtle, quick to find resolutions and fertile in resources, when he is depressed, he recovers with a joke that reveals the popular Walloon citizen, mocking and sentimental. It was therefore fitting to erect a monument to these two popular and significant symbols of the proud city...
