Antique Edwardian Scottish Sterling Silver Military Mascot Goat Ornament

US$4,670.49

About

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian Scottish cast sterling silver military mascot goat ornament; an addition to our silverware collection. This exceptional antique Edwardian cast sterling silver military mascot ornament has been realistically modeled in the form of a Kashmir goat. This impressive antique silver goat ornament is embellished with details reproducing the animal's fur coat and anatomical features. The goat features ornamental terminals to each horn, in addition to a headdress displaying three plumes above the regiment initials 'XLI'. The mascot ornament surmounts a rounded rectangular shaped base embellished with terrain textures. This exceptional example of antique silverware is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. A military mascot (otherwise known as ceremonial pet or regimental mascot) refers to a pet animal maintained by a military unit for ceremonies or to act as an emblem. These animals cannot be declared as military animals as they are not employed for use in warfare as either a weapon or for transport. A Kashmir goat is the military mascot for Welsh regiments, originating from Queen Victorian in 1884. The British Monarchy has provided an unbroken series of Kashmir goats to this company from the Crown's own royal herd. The goat itself becomes a full member of the battalion and can move up the ranks based on how it performs in parades under the handling of the Goat Major; goats have been known to be promoted to Lance Corporal, a non-commissioned officer rank. Goats are believed to bring good luck, a military musing from a 18th century Battle of Bunker Hill story of a wild goat straying onto the battlefield, leading the Royal Welsh Fusiliers' color party from the field. Condition: This antique silver goat ornament is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The cast decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the side of the base are all very clear; the hallmarks are stuck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Dimensions: Length 10.7 cm/4.2" Width 5.7 cm/2.2" Height 11.4 cm/4.5" Weight 12.7 troy ounces/394g Maker: Robert Sawers Date: 1901 Origin: Edinburgh, Scotland Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request.
