Magnificent 19th century French bronze figure of a majestic seated lion with beautiful autumnal, green, black, brown and orange patination and excellent hand finished surface detail on an oval naturalistic base with integral stepped plinth, signed Barye Foundry: Atelier Barye - Artist's own foundry Book Ref: Barye by Michel Poletti & Alain Richarme Page No: 183 Antoine Louis Barye – 1796 ~ 1875 – born in Paris he turned to sculpture in 1817 after his discharge from the army and worked in the studios of Bosio and Gros. In 1819 he took part in the competition of the École des Beaux Arts where he was runner up. Barye exhibited at the salon from 1827 onwards. In a career spanning half a century he had a prodigious output of bronzes imbued with realism and naturalism, and a meticulous attention to anatomical detail.
