1940s Polished Bronze Plated Antonio Canova Lion Bookends

US$460per set

About

Pair of 1940s polished bronze plated metal lion bookends. Signed: “Antonio Canova. 1757-1822.” These lions were originally sculpted by Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757-1822) in larger scale for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica. The Sleeping lion pictured is symbolic of the Pope’s moderation; the vigilant lion represents his energetic work. Incredible pieces that complement neoclassical decor and Hollywood Regency styles. Beautifully crafted and minimal, yet full of opulence in detail. Measures: 7.5” W x 4.5” H x 2.5” D.
