Pair of Metallic Ceramic Modern TOTEMS, Hand Built by Artist Helena Starcevic

$1,695per set

About

Two modern TOTEMS in a rare metallic glaze, each with a sphere on tripod legs. One sphere has carved circular lines emphasizing movement, the other sphere with flattened sides, is more structural. Both are like miniature spaceships in orbit. The glaze, which is no longer mined shows the iron through from the clay body. The light application also shows the texture of the clay beneath. This pair, like robotic bookends, are totally hand built by artist Helena Starcevic. Part of a career-long investigation into modern primitive totemic sculptures: are they human? are they alive? Signed with artist's signature chop underneath. Each is one of a kind. From the artist's private collection. Measurements are for a single piece, not the two standing together. Both are approximately the same height and diameter.

About The Maker

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio.   Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
