Coral Quillon, a Unique Glass Sculpture by James Devereux & David Patchen

$12,215.37

About

Coral Quillon is a unique solid glass sculpture made in collaboration between the British artist James Devereux and the American artist David Patchen. Patchen's work is known for its intense colors, intricate detail and meticulous craftsmanship. He creates simple cup forms created from highly detail murrini pieces. Devereux then uses these, to sculpt and form the final piece. A finishing touch, the top edge is purposely broken and fractured, the results are breathtaking, smooth lines are juxtaposed with the haphazard. The artwork is held aloft, poised on a beautifully crafted steel base. James Devereux Starting in the industry at the tender age of 15 thanks to a work experience placement at Bath Aqua Glass, Devereux showed a natural talent for the craft and has been working as a glass artist ever since. Specialising in working with hot glass, he is adept at working with solid forms as well as blown pieces. Working with extensive knowledge of glass techniques Devereux will happily undertake new challenges. He has previously worked with artists and other glassmakers including Simon Moore, Louis Thompson, Liam Reeves and KT Yun. A high skill level, technique and a good eye help make Devereux one of the up and coming glass craftsmen in the glass world today. In September 2008, Devereux opened his first studio in the inspiring Wiltshire countryside, and a year later he was pulled back to London as the glass technician at the Royal College of Art, a role that opened up vast new contacts and opportunities which are still at the core of his career today. After leaving London in 2013, Devereux set up a new studio in collaboration with glass artist Katherine Huskie. Through their combined talents, Devereux and Huskie Glassworks attract some of the finest artists in the country as a place to make their work. David Patchen A former corporate marketing professional, a glassblowing class in 2001 ignited such a passion that he transitioned his professional career from the software world to full-time glass artist. Patchen has been guest artist at the Corning Museum of Glass and studied at Pilchuck Glass School, founded by Dale Chihuly and John & Anne Hauberg in Stanwood, Washington. In 2010, he was selected as Artist in Residence in Seto City, Japan, spending a month lecturing, demonstrating his work through an award from the Seto City Art and Cultural Foundation. Primarily self-taught, Patchen grew his skills through experimentation informed by observing talented local artists and a few visits with Afro Celotto, maestro and former assistant to Lino Tagliapietra from Murano, Italy. Patchen has received awards for his work including an artistic merit scholarship for a class at Pilchuck. His book David Patchen, Glass is in the permanent collection of the Rakow Library at the Corning Museum of Glass and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Centro Studi del Vetro (Glass Study Center Library) in Venice, Italy. He is actively involved in the glass arts community as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors at Public Glass (San Francisco's center for glass art), member of the Pilchuck Leadership Council and former member of the Board of Directors, Glass Alliance of Northern California. Patchen maintains a private studio within Public Glass where he creates his work. He enjoys and finds inspiration in international travel, the marine environment, science, nature and architecture.
