Framed King Charles II of England Signature and Royal Oak Print

About the Item

A framed group of two related English Royal items Including a King Charles II 'Charles R' signature in black ink on laid paper or vellum and a James Basire print of 'The Royal Oak.' Both pieces are mounted on a brown matte and framed under glass in a small bullnose oak frame. The Reverse bears an old note that reads: 'After Charles II army had been overthrown by Cromwell at Worcester, September 1651, Charles was concealed in a bushy oak in a Shropshire forest. The King was accompanied by Colonel William Careless. After the restoration his name was changed to Carlos at the King's express desire. He was generally known as 'Trusty Dick.' The 'Royal Oak' was protected for a long period by a stone enclosure as illustrated in the picture. All has now entirely disappeared. Simply a terrific framed group! Date: Late 19th Century and earlier Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. The print has staining, foxing, and some light creases. The taped note on the back is not securely attached to the back. Otherwise, the frame has some splitting, edge wear, with some very fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Signed: Signed in the print for the artist 'J Basire' and the engraver 'D Parks' Measurements: Height: ca. 8 3/8 in. Width: 6 7/8 in. Depth: 3/4 in. Sight Height: ca. 7 3/8 in.
