Antique 19th century Georgian solid silver-gilt on green marble inkwell depicting the birth of Venus (Aphrodite). Reclining and bare chested on a mount of shells, with one shell applied with a hinged lid, revealing an inkwell compartment. Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love, beauty, pleasure, passion and procreation. According to ancient Greek mythology, she was born from the bloody froth that foamed when Kronos castrated his father, the sky god Ouranos, with a sickle, and threw the dismembered organs into the sea. Aphrodite emerged from the waves near Paphos on the coast of Cyprus, this is beautiful depicted in 'The Birth of Venus by Botticelli, c.1484-86. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1824 (i), Maker I.B (Rundell, Bridge & Rundell - John Bridge). Condition In great condition - no damage. Size: Height: 14cm Width: 15 x 11cm Weight: 1785g.
