19th Century Louis XVI Style Mantel Clock of a Lion Signed Festeau Le Jeune

About the Item

The clock is signed by the Clockmaker Festeau Le Jeune. The case after a design of François Vion in form of a lion supporting a cylindrical case draped with ribbon tied laurel swags and surmounted by a covered urn hung with a laurel swag, all on a rectangular marble plinth centred by gilt bronze mounted ribbon-tied oak leaf spray, raised on bun feet, white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals for the minutes and Roman numerals for the hours, within a hinged glazed bezel, roman chapters, Arabic minute numerals, pierced gilt hands, three-week going movement, striking the half- and full hours. François Vion (maître 1764) was a prolific maker of clock cases. A design for this clock case is preserved in the Bibliothèque. Another example of the clock, as well as the drawing is illustrated in Ottomeyer, H. and P. Proschel, ed, Vergoldete Bronzen, v. 1, figs. 3.11.4 and 3.11.6. A related clock was recorded in the apartments of the Prince de Condé at the Palais Bourbon in 1779. This clock was auctioned in the 1990s by Sotheby's Monaco as being 18th century period. We are not as sure and therefore we are offering it here very carefully as 19th century. However, the bronze work of this fantastic clock has the quality of an 18th century mantel clock. The movement has been cleaned, revised and is in perfect working order.

The waisted case with pierced foliate bronze mounts and surmounted by a foliate finial with a bird. On scroll feet, the bracked conformingly mounted and decorated with a scene with dogs. A fine three week going movement, striking half and full hours on a silvered bronze bell. Festeau Le Jeune became master in 1769. Clock case and bracket are stamped by the ebenist ‘A. Gosselin’ (Antoine Gosselin 1731-1794, Paris, master in 1752), as well as the stamp of the Parisian gilt ‘JME’. In French interior design, Vernis Martin is a type of lustrous lacquer substitute widely used in the 18th century to decorate a wide variety of items from furniture and coaches to such personal articles as fans and snuffboxes. The technique was named after the French brothers Guillaume and Etienne-Simon Martin, who perfected the process, but covers work by other craftsmen as well. Highly praised by Voltaire, it was developed to imitate East Asian lacquerware...
