c.1900 French Industrial Fire Engine Clock

About the Item

Inv. #: f302 Case: The red painted, silvered and gilt-bronze case stands on a black Belgian marble base and depicts an early 20th century horse drawn steam powered fire engine. It has ‘D.H. Depose’ engraved on a silvered plaque and has a hinged silvered door to access the winding arbor for the animation movement. Dial: The painted silvered chapter-ring dial has Roman numerals for the hours, a gilt-bronze center, Arabic 5-minute marks and steel-cut hands. The painted silvered chapter-ring barometer dial is in French, has a gilt center and dual indicator hands. Movement: The time-only movement is wound through the front, has a balance wheel escapement and is adjusted for fast/slow out the dial. The animation movement is housed below, is wound out the back and drives the large wheel and three piston linkages for approximately 1.5 hours. Notes: This is an exceptionally rare example from the industrial series created by Guilmet that celebrated the industrial revolution and all the machines developed during that era.
