Louis XVI Allegorical Figurative Clock Depicting Venus Being Crowned by Amour
About the Item
A fine and rare model of a period Louis XVI white marble and gilt bronze mantel (fireplace) clock, the dial signed Dhemant A Paris. The clock features two large gilded classically draped bronze figures standing on either side of the large white enamel dial with Arabic numerals; Venus to the left and a winged Amour on the right. The clock has its original silk string suspension movement and rings the hours and halfs on a bell. The name of the clockmaker Dhemant could not be found in any of the reference books on antique clocks researched.
Also, the clock has some missing elements the crown held by Amour and what may have been a bird in Venus's hands, and a rather intriguing underside to the base. Missing elements on Louis XVI and indeed even later French clocks is a fairly common phenomenon especially when seen in light of the rampant destruction inflicted by the French Revolution of fine and decorative arts, furniture, monuments, palaces, churches, abbeys monasteries, cemeteries, chateaus and other edifices associated with Royalty, the Bourgeoisie and the Church. Even if this is speculative, a case in point of this destruction may be the base of the clock which is likely a replacement to the destroyed original. Behind the white marble veneer and gilt bronze bas relief and plaques on the front and side the base of this clock, there is a solid black marble block that is full of alternating Latin and French inscriptions suggesting that the base may have been fashioned out of a piece of marble from a destroyed monument or tombstone. Photos of the base with these inscriptions are included in the photo gallery.
Luckily for posterity not all similar model clocks were destroyed as besides ones that may be in private hands, an identical model clock but with a different white marble base is displayed in he Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. The same clock is also shown on page 164 of the book titled "Les Ouvriers du Temps: La pendule à Paris de Louis XIV à Napoléon Ier: Ornamental Clocks and Clockmakers in 18th century Paris by by Jean Dominique Augarde published by Antiquorum.
