Late 18th Century French Marble and Gilt Bronze Clock

About the Item

A fine example of a late 18th century Directoir marble and gilt bronze clock after a model by Deverberie. The dial is signed a Paris but the maker is not known. The clock sits on an open patinated bronze plinth adorned with a central gilt wreath; and flanked with vertical floral decorations, the dial surmounted with a basket of flowers flanked by trailing garlands. The bronze frame sitting on four large lion feet on a further green marble base having a large rectangular gilded frieze featuring a procession of frolicking puttis including ones pulling a little chariot , one with a dog on a leash, another with a sheepin tow and even the odd goat hoofed fawn. A highly decorative gilded pendulum showing butterflies swings between the large open central gilded wreath.

    Wear consistent with age and use. The mercury gilding is original and in areas shows some deterioration and oxidation . The clock movement is also totally original and is in good working order.
