US$4,950Asking Price

About

This three piece mantel clock was crafted in France, circa 1889; the centrally mounted spelter clock is surmounted by a lyre and flanked by draped mythological female figures, one playing the music instrument, the other holding a laurel wreath. The clock is standing on a green onyx and gilt metal base, supported by sphinx form feet. Matching pair of seven-light candelabras with female mythical figures holding the lights, also siting on green onyx and gilt base and both candle holders are signed E. Rancoulet. The clock movement features a dial bezel set with rhinestones with circular brass two-train time and gong strike marked "Marti & Cie" and signed "Medaille d'Argent 1889" (see last picture). The clock mechanism has been revised and cleaned, and is now in excellent working condition. Good condition commensurate with age and use with gilt painted finish. Key and pendulum included. Ernest Rancoulet (1870-1915), born in Bordeaux, was a French sculptor best known for his Neoclassical bronze figures of mythological creatures, society women, and athletes. Rancoulet participated in the Paris Salon for several years, regularly exhibiting his elegant figurines and portrait busts. His practice was distinct for his affinity for working in pairs, often casting two varying copies of the same subject intended to be displayed side by side, as seen in his Pair of Bronze Figures of Victorian Women. The sculptor also frequently inscribed mythical verse onto his works, notably including Ovid's Metamorphoses. Measures: Clock 20.25" W x 8" D x 30" H Candelabra 9.5" W x 7" D x 34.75" H.
