Gilt Bronze & Marble Belle Époque Mantel Clock w. Infant Bacchus Sculpture 1870s

US$8,655.21

About

Large and exceptional, mid 19th century, god of wine theme clock by Vincenti & Cie, Paris. Throughout the 19th century, French artisans have made some of the most amazing quality and meaningful antiques using the most expensive materials and techniques available. This top quality made and sizable mantle clock has all of that and then some. So if you are looking for an impressive, stylish, meaningful and sizable antique clock to grace your mantel piece or side table then this mid 1800s French work of art could be perfect for you. The design and the quality of the gilt bronze floral ornaments on the marble base are truly amazing and with the daylight shining onto the guilding this clock becomes an even more impressive work of art. However, what makes this antique clock really stand out is the exceptional bronze sculpture of the infant Bacchus. This young god of wine sculpture has some of the best details and the most beautiful patina we have ever seen. The top quality of this bronze sculpture combined with the famous clock maker's name of Vicenti & Cie (of Paris, France) on the clock mechanism leads us to believe that this unique bronze Bacchus was hand-crafted by sculptor Claude Michel Clodion. If you are a wine enthousiast, a wine collector, a wine seller or maybe even the owner of a vineyard then you could not wish for a more interesting and meaningful antique mantel clock. This sculpture depicts Bacchus (or Dionysos as he is known in Greece) as a very young child in a 'crown of vine leaves'. With his right arm he is emptying his grapes filled rush basket into a barrel whilst squeezing the grapes with his left. From that barrel you can actually see the grape juice pouring into the ancient wine cup below. The stylish design, the well balanced proportions and the stunning details truly make this clock a wonderful sight to see. The Parisian eight day mechanism by Vicenti & Cie of Paris runs perfectly and this clock strikes once on the half hours and on the holes as many times as the hour dial indicates. By the way, the name on the dial face (Bonniere Et Cousteix) is the name of the high-end dealer in Clermont-Ferrand, France who sold this clock to its first owner about 150 years ago. Thanks to the Roman black numerals on the pure white enameled dial face telling time is easy from a larger distance as well. Have you also noticed the perfect condition, gilt dial hands with the Gothic symbol for the trinity? All these exceptional and meaningful details make this one of the most stylish and interesting antique mantel clocks we ever had the pleasure of offering. Mind you, our fair price for this great value for money clock even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days. Maximum height x width x depth: 22 x 16.9 x 8.4 inches. Weight: 50 pounds or 22.5 kilos. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by.
