Gilt Bronze and Blue Lapis Lazuli Clock with Bust of Molière

About the Item

A gilt bronze and blue lapis lazuli clock with bust of Molière French, circa 1830 Measures: Height 61cm, width 27cm, depth 13cm This exquisite French mantel clock originates from circa 1830, and more recently the piece has been veneered in blue lapis lazuli. It features a sculptural bust of the celebrated French playwright Molière. The clock is of classical design, with a rectangular case sitting on a stepped base on gilt bronze supports. The circular dial is positioned to the centre of the case, with two gilt bronze bands above and below- the upper band being a more simple cornice band, whilst the lower is richly decorated with a continuous formation of anthemion leaves. The clock is surmounted by a gilt bronze bust of the famed French playwright Molière (1622-1673) whose works, including The School for Wives and L'Avare, are celebrated and performed to this day. Molière's influence is so great, in fact, that the French language is often referred to as the "language of Molière". This fine clock would therefore appeal not just as a decorative piece, to a collector or horologist, but also to those with a love of history and literature.
