Tall French Louis XVI Long Case Clock w/ Walnut Case, circa 1790

About

From the historically important city of Lyon, an impressive & well-proportioned late 18th century Louis XVI long-case clock in walnut with inlays. This Comtoise clock assembled in the Compté region of France was brought to Lyon by the "retailer" to add the enamaled face and evetually the case once it was sold. It features an arched bonnet over arched glass-paneled door opens to an enamel dial, reading "Martin a Lyon", surrounded by pressed brass decoration in relief with references to a bountiful harvest: Flower-filled basket, acanthus leaves and cornucopias brimming with wheat. The emblem of Louis XIV, the sun king, crowns this grouping in brass. Has original hands tipped with sun emblems, another reference to the sun king, with painted Roman numerals over the enamel face. France, circa 1790. Measures: 23" wide x 14" deep x 99" high The movement: The pendulum suspension housing is located at the rear of the iron frame & is about 2 1/2" tall. This dates the clock between 1740 and 1800. The "dentetes" (the locking levers in the strike train) are activated by a spring-mounted on the right rear post of the clock frame. This configuration was used up to 1800. The mechanism has a crown wheel escapement which was used between 1680 and 1840. The pendulum is a lead bob and folding wire rod which was used between 1680 and 1790 (this may not be original to the clock) The dial: Made in Lyon, the dial is enamel which was in fashion between 1750 and 1840. The hour & minute hands are cut brass which were in favor between 1810 and 1920. The repousee is in two pieces dividing at the 9 and 3 and it conforms to the clock frame on all sides except the top which dates the repousee to between 1810 and 1850. The theme of the repousee refers to a theme of Louis XIV who was the sun king and further back to the Egyptian sun god RA. This was an Empire or Napoleonic symbol that was in use in 1810. Notes: "All of these types of comtoise movements were made in the French-Compté region, hence the name "comtoise", and assembled by the farming community during the winter months. What is a comtoise clock? Comtoise clock. ( More about the Comté region) A form of provincial, weight-driven clock originally made in the vicinity of Morbier in the Franche*-Comté region of France (Contée in the old spelling), near the Swiss frontier, from the late 17th century to the beginning of the 20th."
