Tortoiseshell and Silver Carriage Clock John Batson, London, Circa 1890

A tortoiseshell and silver carriage clock, maker John Batson, London 1890/91. A fine late 19th century small Victorian carriage clock, tortoiseshell veneered with sterling silver mounts and feet. The case is raised on silver claw feet and has embossed and pierced silver panels to the sides and back with a silver frame to the glass face and pierced silver dome top and handle. An eight day movement, striking on a coil gong on the hours and half hours. The silver bears a London hallmark for 1890/91 and the maker's initials 'JB' for John Batson. The inside or the rear door is stamped 'Batson'. John Batson London silversmith, 42-43, Brewer Street, Soho, London. Founded by John Batson in 1850, 24, Little Pulteney Street Soho. Originally a cabinet maker that went into silver. After his sons joined the firm, the name was restyled to John Batson & Sons. John Batson retired in 1892. The clock has had a full service and is in beautiful condition.
