Rare Georgian Mason's Ironstone Candlestick in Fence Japan Pattern, circa 1820

US$536.76

About

This is a rare and decorative Ironstone pottery candlestick, hand painted in the Fence Japan pattern and made by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1820. Mason's ironstone Candlesticks are rare items. The candlestick has a circular base with beaded detail to the base rim, top rim and in two places on the stem. This Pillar or Taper Candlestick is beautifully decorated in one of Mason's striking chinoiserie patterns, called the Fence Pattern. The pattern is richly hand-painted, over-glaze in bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange and salmon all in varying shades, possibly over a blue transfer printed under-glaze outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 89 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club There are no Mason's markings to this piece that we can find, which was often the case around this period but this piece is definitely by Mason's and an identical piece in this shape and pattern is illustrated on page 167, Plate 207, in the book; Mason's china and the Ironstone Wares, by Geoffrey A Godden, published by the Antique Collectors' Club. A lovely rare piece of Mason's ironstone in a striking pattern.
