Pair of South European Faux Marble Painted and Parcel-Gilt Wooden Torchères
About the Item
A pair of South European carved parcel-giltwood and faux-marble painted torchères from the late 18th or early 19th century. Carved all-over with gilt acanthus foliage, each piece features a hexagonal molded top shelf supported by three S-scroll corbels joining a turned baluster-shaped central shaft. The torcheres end on three volutes issuing delicate bellflower drops and resting on paw feet, which in turn rest on a carved tripod base ending on bun feet. The exuberant polychromy along with the rich carved decoration of this pair of South European torchères from the late 18th century, characteristic of the Baroque style, could be a formidable accent in any room, mounted into lamps or simply framing a mantelpiece.
