20th Century Silver Italian Candelabra Hercules & Hidra on wood base

About the Item

Silver 800 candelabra. The nine-light candelabra represents Hercules to fight the Hydra. Completely handmade in casting and chisel. By ARGENTERIE DI MILANO - Fiorentini à Milan - Italy Wooden base 17,800 grams of 800 silver This item was exhibited in Turin - Reggia di Venaria - for the exhibition "Hercules and his myth" Rooms of the Arts, The Lernaean Hydra or Hydra of Lerna (Greek: Lernaîa Hýdra), more often known simply as the Hydra, was a serpentine water monster in Greek and Roman mythology. Its lair was the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, which was also the site of the myth of the Danaids. Lerna was reputed to be an entrance to the Underworld[1] and archaeology has established it as a sacred site older than Mycenaean Argos. In the canonical Hydra myth, the monster is killed by Heracles, more often known as Hercules, using sword and fire, as the second of his Twelve Labors. According to Hesiod, the Hydra was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It possessed many heads, the exact number of which varies according to the source. Later versions of the Hydra story add a reGeneration feature to the monster: for every head chopped off, the Hydra would regrow a couple of heads. The craftsman Mr. Fiorentini, the ower of ARGENTYERIE DI MILANO .- MILAN - ITALY wanted to make the series of the labors of Hercules. He made the first 4 specimens of Hercules and Hydra of which 3 pieces are placed in world collections. Then he desisted from making all the works due to the difficulty and complexity of the realization of the piece.
