Poole Silver Co.
The Poole Silver Company was formed in 1892 by George Poole and Edward Roche in Taunton as Poole, Roche & Co., then established as a corporation on May 21, 1895. They was in the beginning manufacturer of plated silverware and manufacturer of silver products made with electroplating techniques. In 1900 it operated in a small two-room factory at 106 Whittington Street, and later moved to 320 Whittington Street. From 1946 the firm began to produce sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and cutlery. Later, Poole bought the full control and managed the company until his death. Louis Kuppenheim Company
The company was grounded in 1854 by Louis Kuppenheim (1824-1889) and Heinrich Witzenmann, specialized in silver and gold and enameled artefacts. On the World Exhibition in 1900 the firm received a gold medal for a letter opener. In that same year the company opened a branch in the Rue Richelieu 67 in Paris. In these years some designs by Hans Christiansen were executed, amongst them very delicately enameled silver cigarette cases. The enamels on the several silver and gold pieces was of very high standard, and sometimes even gems like rubies were applied. This extraordinary and beautiful cased-box, was created in London England during the Art Deco period. Has a great provenance and was designed by the famous silversmiths and retail store of Finnigans Limited, back in the 1932. The thematic of this box is rare and very popular. Has been crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver standard with gilded interiors. The case has been made in a cushioned compact shape with eight barrels hinge and a push pressure thumb. The main panel on top is illustrated with a landscape scene and a Formula-1 racing red car, with the number L6, all realized with polychrome enamels. The reverse is embellished with engine turned guilloche decorations. This fine piece is masterfully worked with extreme details and is a very especial example for any collector, or a wonderful gift for someone special. It is in perfect preserved condition.

Gorgeously detailed and hand-crafted ‘sadeli mosaic’ inlay, from the Bombay Area, with deep greens with silver, pewter, mother of pearl, bone and ebony in geometric patterns.
The box case, is made of sandalwood but completely covered in MOP, bone, faux ivory, ebony and mosaic inlay.
Edged with faux ivory and banded with a different pattern of sadeli mosaic.
Some minor damage to the top (repair is obvious in pics) and ivorine replacements to some edging, but it still a BEAUTIFUL BOX and of real QUALITY!
The mosaic work is FABULOUS!
Box opens to reveal its original blue velvet lining.
It sits on 4 (recently added) silvered button feet.
SADELI MOSAIC: “Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins.
The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before the Anglo Indian boxes were made. It was a technique, which required a high degree of skill and patience. It was executed very lavishly, in that the frequent cuts wasted a great amount of the precious materials used. The workmanship was however more than commensurable to the value of the materials.
Ivory, silver, pewter (or other metals), wood and horn were cut into faceted rods which were bound together to form geometric patterns. When the glue has set, the rods were sliced in transverse sections. This gave the maker a number of angled circular pieces in the original pattern. Several variations of patterns could be achieved by combining the materials in different ways. The ivory was sometimes dyed green to give an extra color.
The mosaic pieces in a combination of patterns, often separated by ivory, ebony, horn or silver stringing were used to veneer sandalwood boxes. In the early boxes, which date from the turn of the 18th to the 19th century, there are large panels of mosaic covering tops and sides of boxes. It took incredible skill to cover such large areas without any shakes or wavering of the pattern. The corners and joins on these boxes are impeccably matched.
The makers (reputed to be Persian) of Sadeli mosaic made in the first two decades of the 19th century displayed a total understanding of the qualities of the different materials they used. They combined substances, which can expand and contract according to atmospheric conditions with others, which are hard and unyielding. The result was a sharp definition of the lines and patterns, which made up the whole design.
On the early boxes the designs look deceptively simple. The fact is, they emerged from a culture, which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points. The patterns are so harmoniously combined that their incredible complexity is not immediately apparent.

Antique Silver Snuff Box Hunting Scene Design - 1837

We are delighted to offer this Victorian solid silver snuff box with the maker's mark of Charles Rawlings & William Summers, London 1837.
Whilst the box's shape and initial geometric design by itself may not be of distinction, it is undeniably the marvellous hand engraving that profusely embellishes all sides of the box that truly makes this a unique snuff box.
The top lid features a monogrammed cartouche embedded within a wreath of acanthus and folate scrolls. Hidden within the design is a stag hunt scene, where a stag (on the left) is being chased by two hounds (one slightly below the stag to the right and the other on the far right).
Although impressive at first glance, it is only upon spending more time looking closer from various angles that one can fully appreciate the artistic engraving of the scene that is akin to a painting.
The scene has been carefully planned out and engraved in layers and stages such that it creates motion, emotion and captures the chaotic nature of a stag hunt.
For instance, the stag appears to be jumping out of the bushes as its left leg jumps out in the foreground whilst its right leg appears to be caught up behind another acanthus scroll.
Its facial expression is depicted with trepidation and its tongue is sticking out, yet, to retain stylistic and artistic aesthetics, its neck and head slightly tilts up following the curvature of the central cartouche without obstructing the design. The two hounds are also carefully positioned to portray their unrelenting energy and speed, the one close to the stag appearing from the right and the other prancing through the leaves from above and behind.
The interior of the snuff box is fully gilt with a beautiful rich gold tone and a presentation engraving by an MP is beautifully engraved. The layer of gold not only acts as an accent to the silver exterior but prevents the contents inside from tarnishing the silver.
Interestingly, there seems to be an original error or change in mind for the presentation as the lettering has been finely altered from "Presented by/to" which can be faintly seen depending on the angle.
Last but not least, the base of the snuff box is matched with the top and side with further acanthus embellishments and a central cartouche that depicts an architectural scene with a statue, collums and trees in the background.
By design, despite the base not being seen regularly, this snuff box has been decorated with no expenses, time or effort spared and every inch even on the base has been decorated by a skilled engraver without a single slip of the hand.
