Traditional Wooden Hand-Painted Lacquer Box from Olinalá, Mexico

About the Item

This traditional hand-painted box is representative of a technique typical of the region of Olinalá, in the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico. The most important centre of lacquer production in the country, their procedure employs chia oil -an endemic plant- and different natural pigments. This piece, mostly in red color, depicts animals and stylized flowers from everyday life, such as owls, rabbits, fish, cats and butterflies, which is a typical feature of the style. It combines two different techniques: rayado (scratched), used on the etching of the figures, and punteado (dotted), visible on the remaining areas painted with small dots. In Mexico, lacquer ware has been cultivated since pre Hispanic times, having different origins from Asian lacquer ware. During the Spanish colonial era, the indigenous tradition combined with European and Asian designs due to a vast net of international trade. Olinalá lacquer ware is a splendid result of this mix of cultures.
