Antique English Sterling Silver Playing Card Box, Chester, 1901
About the Item
A wonderful and rare example of an English playing card box by the silversmith's, Grey & Co.
Standing on the original four feet, all four panels retain the original bevelled glass protecting four original antique playing cards; clearly this example was made to celebrate Edward Vll becoming King in 1901, one of the cards featuring him and another with his wife, Alexandra of Denmark.
The hinged lid lifts to reveal three compartments for three decks of playing cards, the cards inside are modern cards. Each compartment has a board with a silk ribbon (replacement) which sits under the cards used to lift a pack out of the box.
The interior and underside reveals the original red leather.
A magnificent box in excellent condition measuring 3 1/8" x 3 1/8" x 5 1/2" tall. Fully hallmarked for the highly collectable Chester assay office in the year 1901.
