Salt-Glazed Dish Made in England, circa 1765

About

We are excited to be offering this very special salt-glazed stoneware fruit dish. Made circa 1765 this elaborately pierced dish was usually placed on the table with salt-glazed baskets. We know for sure that this was made as a fruit dish because at one time in the 18th century a potter wrote on the back of an almost identical plate "fruit dishes" while the clay was still wet. So we can imagine sweet fruit and grapes being brought to the table on this beautiful dish. (See: "Salt-Glazed Stoneware in Early America" images on pg. 151 figs. 18 and 19 by J.E.Skerry and S.F. Hood). Background of Salt-Glazed Pottery: In the UK during the 17th and 18th century, high quality salt-glazed stoneware was produced in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, London and Staffordshire. Salt-glazed pottery became popular in North America from the early 17th century until the early 19th century, indeed it was the dominant domestic pottery there during the 19th century.
