Tobia Scarpa for Venini Large 'Vetro Battuto' Ochre Hammered Glass Bowl, 1957

About

One of Tobia Scarpa's first manufactured designs which was made while he was working at the Venini factory as a young man in his early 20s. Part of a series of 'vetro battuto' or 'hammered glass' objects designed by Scarpa, this exceptional large bowl or dish displays the hammered technique on its exterior. The center is a deep, rich brown that fades to a burnt ochre on its edges. An impressive, rare example that works well as a centerpiece or sculptural object. Catalogued: Domus 373 (dicembre 1960), pp. 31-32; Franco Deboni, I Vetri Venini catalogo 1921-2007, Allemandi, Torino, 2007, Tav. 164. Venini Catalogo Rosso, model no. 8509; "Rassegna Domus," Domus Milan, 385, December 1961 (for the complete series); Marc Heiremans, Art Glass from Murano: 1910-1970, Stuttgart, 1993, p. 285, no. 239; Helmut Ricke and Eva Schmitt, Italian Glass: Murano Milan 1930-1970, Munich, 1997, p. 162, no. 150; Franco Deboni, Venini Glass: Catalogue 1921-2007, Turin, 2007, no. 165.
