About

Bog Boat Going To Ground Manufactured by Joe Hogan Produced in exclusive for SIDE GALLERY Ireland, 2020 Bog pine(roots of pine trees which had been covered with peat for 3000 yeas) and willow rods, variety Harrisons Measurements 97 cm x 36 cm x 33h cm 38,18 in x 14,17 in x 12,99h in Joe Hogan is a master basket-maker based in Loch Na Fooey, a glacial lake situated in the west of Ireland. He has been practicing basketry since 1978, and in that time has earned a reputation for making strong, durable baskets of the highest quality. The colours in these award-winning baskets are those of the natural willows which he grows at Loch na Fooey. Joe’s work is inspired by the richness of materials the earth provides. He grows his own willow and harvests other naturally occurring materials such as wood, bark, larch, birch, bog myrtle twigs, willow twigs and catkins that he incorporates in his work. Joe trained with numerous Irish basket makers, learning techniques rarely seen in the modern day he is regarded as one of Ireland’s master craftsmen and has gained a worldwide reputation for his work. Over the past fifteen years Joe has become increasingly interested in artistic baskets. This work is prompted by a desire to develop a deeper connection to the natural world. “Every time we walk out into the world we have the opportunity to see it new and to experience the wonder of being here.” By experimenting with earthy materials such as ‘bog pine’ - roots of pine trees preserved for thousands of years under the Irish bog land – Hogan’s works achieve a wealth of natural color and variety of textures. “When I make artistic baskets, I am trying?to rediscover the richness of the land. I also hope it will touch the spirit of others in some way.”
