Lifesize Pair of Original French Bronze Sculptures of Herons- Moigniez

$24,000

About

This important and unusual pair of life size French 19th century Blue Herons are realistically depicted with the two birds foraging in their natural environment. One large Heron is holding a frog in its mouth, while the other with wings flared and out stretched neck, wants to share in the find. Audubon quality details featuring full body volume, chiseled feathers, and a base cast with foliage, undergrowth, tree stumps and natural vegetation make this piece remarkable. The sculptor captures realism in its native element while portraying statues that are full of movement and emotion. Signed: Moigniez Jules In very good antique condition with verdigris patina. Can be used indoors or outdoors Some of Moignez's works were made in spelter or white metal ( which is much less collectible and valuable than bronze ) while others were reproduced and are copies. One example of a common reproduction is the large outstretched eagle. Original 19th century bronze castings and are of the period. As a pair these are even more valuable and sought after by collectors since they have been kept together for all these years. Moignez'es pieces can be viewed at the Chateau de Compiegne Museum north of Paris where some of the French national collection is housed, as well as amidst the collection of the Mont-de Marsan museum. ~ 27- 28 ht x 36 long, Base footprint ~ 34 long x 15-16 deep. Jules Moigniez was a French animalier sculptor born in Senlis in 1835 and died in May 1894, Saint- Martin- du Tetre, Vald'Oise, France. He was best known for his bronze sculpture depicting birds with finely detailed bases. His pieces were among the finest created during his time. Moigniez's career was launched at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition. He also exhibited frequently at the Paris salons from 1859-1892 where he won several bronze and silver metals. Moigniez enjoyed great success not only in Europe but in the UK and America where his works were sold.
