19 C Cast Plaster Bust of Moliere with Limestone Socle on Plaster Pedestal

About the Item

This large and impressive bust cast in plaster and then placed on a carved stone socle is truly a great decorative object. This figure is after the model produced by Caffieri and depicts Moliere within a draped mantle. The figure is shown in classically draped robes and is wearing the large wig so often used in France during the late 16th through the very early 18th century. Moliere also known by his given name Jean-Baptiste Poquelin(born 1622 and died 1673) one of France's great actors and as a play write is considered one of western literature's greatest masters of comedy. He was a close with many leading aristocrats of the day including his greatest patron Philippe I Duke of Orleans the brother of Louis XIV. His first command performance for the king took place in at the Louvre but he was later given use by the crown of salle du Petit-Bourbon and then later the Palais-Royal as a theater and studio. He eventually earned a royal pension for himself and his troupe as well as the tile "Troupe du Roi" and was the official author of all court entertainments. This busts form taken from Jacques Caffieri's work of the same in bronze was made famous in the author and artists lifetime. Caffieri was born in 1678 and died in 1716. he worked as a bronzer and achieved great success working for the crown in specific commissions for rooms within Versailles, Fontainebleau, Marly, Compiegne, and other royal residences. The bust shows weather and wear indicating that for a long time its been outside but not directly exposed to the element.
