Sculptural Hand-Built Ceramic High-Back Chair in White Glaze

About the Item

Unique Hand-Built Sculptural Ceramic High-Backed Chair by American-ceramicist and artist Sean Gerstley. This chair is suitable for indoor or outdoor placement, as it is finished in bright white automotive paint with a subtle sheen, making it nearly impervious to the elements. The hand-pinched forming of the clay is reminiscent of sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, while the dramatically exaggerated height of the seat back calls to mind the forms of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's iconic chairs from the Art Nouveau period. However, this hand-built ceramic work stands on their own as a unique object of functional design, with Gerstley's signature dappled pinched clay surfaces, which have become instantly recognizable in their own right. Artist Information: Sean Gerstley is a ceramicist living and working in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating RISD in 2012, Gerstley showed works made in collaboration with Katie Stout at Johnson Trading Company in New York and Gallery Diet in Miami. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Architectural Digest, Artforum, Dwell, Elle Decor Italia, Metropolis, Sight Unseen and Surface. He was also recently named on Sight Unseen's 2021 American Design Hot List.

  • Hand-Sculpted & Gilded Ceramic Figural Fruit Bowl by Sean Gerstley
    By Sean Gerstley
    Located in New York, NY
This larger-than-life figural sculpture is functional ceramic serving-ware. Standing nearly 6' feet tall, with hand-sculpted vegetal, delicate leaf-like petals and pinched palm-like trunk, it is topped by a splendiferous fruit crown reminiscent of a pineapple or bunch of bananas. This friendly, human-scale piece offers to serve up three gilded platters of fine cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruit, canapés, or crudités, in a most charming and hospitable fashion. Additional Information: Commissioned for an installation at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood entitled 'Hall of Mirrors,' the work is a response to a prompt to materialize the overt display of social media. This piece was created along with two other fruit bowls, each unique. This is the last available fruit bowl of the original trio. Artist Information: Sean Gerstley (b. 1989) is a Philadelphia-based ceramicist. Working primarily with clay, Gerstley creates both sculptural and functional objects, pinching the surfaces of his coil-built forms finished off with colorful glazes. Expanding the role of ceramics from dinnerware or vessel to larger scale objects such as tables or floor lamps, Gerstley imagines interiors made entirely of his chosen medium. After graduating from the ceramics program at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2012, Gerstley showed work made in collaboration with Katie Stout at Salon 94 in New York and Nina Johnson...

  • Large-Scale Ceramic Sculptural Cup & Saucer Vase Glazed in Glossy Blue & Teal
    By Jaye Kim
    Located in New York, NY
Large-scale Hand-Built Glazed Ceramic Sculpture, entitled 'Cup & Saucer' by Brooklyn-based artist and ceramicist Jaye Kim. This generously oversized cup and saucer is scaled up for maximum impact, and glazed in a glossy mix of exuberant teal and vibrant cobalt blue that emphasizes the drippy textured surface with a subtle sheen that catches the light. This work is composed of two separate pieces: the cup, and the saucer upon which it neatly sits. The cup can function as a vessel for an enormous bunch of flowers, a cachepot for a plant, or stand alone as a decorative object. With its monumental proportions, this piece brings a mega-size sense of whimsy to any setting. Artist Information: Jaye Kim is a Korean-American artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her ceramic work is an exploration of her interior world regarding the symbolism and rituals of motherhood. Depicting the mundane objects Kim interacts with daily in ginormous scale, from cups and saucers to skin care face masks and cabbages, the ordinary is transformed into the interpersonal. In her oversized hand built vessels, surface details derived from her coiling and pinching emerge to tell a story about our everyday domestic objects, highlighted by delicate lustres and stunning, saturated glaze work. Jaye Kim is a graduated of the School of Visual Arts, where she studied animation. Her work has been shown at Egg Collective...
