Empire fireback or backsplash, cast iron, from the Empire II period, 1804-1815.
In the past, the first model to produce a fireback, was sculptured in wood. Often, a vertical or horizontal line is slightly to see,
it's the sign of a plank. They pressed this wooden model in a kind of sand/clay, to make a copy in cast iron.
A fireback protects the back-wall inside the fireplace, against splitting and crumbling, in addition, the cast iron fireback absorbs the heat and releases it into the room. This Empire fireback will be only nice in an Empire-Directoire-style fireplace, no other.
A fireback can also be for decorative purpose, such as a backsplash above a kitchen stove.
The lower part, made for an open fireplace, can be removed by me.
