Romanesque Column Stone Architectural Fragment

US$2,109.11

About

This Spanish grey sandstone column dates circa 12th-13th century. It most likely was an arch support in a cloister arcade. The peculiar shape has to been seen in the light of the centuries of Islamic influence in the Iberic world. This import of particular shapes as the starform is derived from arabesques and mixed with local traditions it resulted in a unique architectural language. It is even possible that columns like this would have been recuperated from Moorish buildings after the Reconquista (reconquering of Spain by the Catholics). Interesting is that sometimes great art is created when cultures mix and that pieces like this even today have a modern appearance to the contemporary eye. This column is mounted on a custom made iron base.
