Exceptional Embroidered Japanese Ceremonial Kimono
About the Item
A visually striking antique Uchikake Wedding Kimono/Robe for ceremonial occasion, circa end of Meiji to Taisho period 1910s-1930s. This bridal outer garment is of a bright red color that features elaborate and intricate embroidery. Using brilliant colored and gold threads, the artisan decorated the kimono with the most auspicious symbols including flying phoenix, blooming peonies, fans, maple branches, and wisteria flowers. They form roundel motifs in a highly elaborate layout, especially striking when viewed from the back. The interior of the kimono is also padded with red fabric and weighted down at the bottom trim. The outer garment is larger than life-size and meant for ceremonial use only. It makes a string textile art for any bespoken interior.
