Japanese Painted Wood Figure of a Guardian King, Edo Period, 18th Century
$2,400

About
A striking Japanese carved and painted wooden temple figure of a Buddhist Heavenly King, Edo Period late 18th century. Although he is missing his identifying attribute, based on his stance and color of his face, it is most likely that this sculpture portrays the Guardian of the West, Virupaksa, known as Komoku-ten in Japan.
The fierce protector, or Dhamapala, is carved and vibrantly painted in mineral pigments with gilt highlights. Portrayed in an active stance, with one foot raised upon a rocky outcrop, Komoku-ten, the All Seeing Guardian of the West, is dressed in the robes and armor of a general, colorful scarves billowing around his waist. His face and hands painted a crimson red, a metal crown upon his head, a tiger skin to his back.
Crafted in the block construction technique, and carved from hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood.
