About
An absolutely lovely Japanese lacquered and gilt wooden figure of Kannon Botatsu (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva), Edo Period, early 19th century or earlier, Japan.
The Bodhisattva of Compassion, known as Kannon in Japan, Guanyin in China, and Avalokiteshvara in India, is one of the most beloved and revered figures in Buddhism. The embodiment of mercy and compassion, Kannon is said to hear the cries of the world, and seeks to bring comfort to all those who are suffering.
Kannon is portrayed here seated upon a richly gilt double lotus pedestal and dressed in heavy, sumptuous robes decorated with intricate gilt painted brocade designs. The boddhisatva's long hair pulled back in a high chignon to crown the head. The right hand held out in varada mudra, the gesture of granting wishes or favors. In the other hand, Kannon holds a vase, an attribute said to contain pure water capable of washing away suffering.
Kannon's full face is sensitive and serene, with finely carved details. A necklace in raised lacquer graces the bare chest.
