Japanese Articulated Model of a Lobster, by Myochin Muneyuki, Mid 20th Century

US$1,350

About

A fascinating and whimsical Japanese articulated model of a spiny lobster, jizai okimono, by Muneyuki Myochin, the fifty first head of the Myochin school of metal workers, Showa Era, mid 20th century, Japan. The spiny lobster ingeniously and realistically crafted of joined copper sheets. The joints all articulated, allowing the sculpture to be played with and posed. All the legs move, the two pair of antennae extend, the segmented body bends, and the tail fans. The underside of the lobster signed Myochin Muneyuki Saku. Total length with antennae folded back: 8.25" Total length with antennae extended: 15" With the original inscribed hinoki (cypress) wood storage box, tomobako. Okimono are small ornamental sculpture meant for display and admiration. Jizai okimono are a special group of Japanese okimono, usually of insects and crustaceans, and more rarely of snakes, dragons and fish. What sets a jizai okimono apart from other okimono is their articulated joints. They are often referred to as "play things", and were favored equally by scholars, merchants, and the nobility. Jizai okimono also found popularity outside of Japan as objects of curiosity.
