Chinese Jade Archer's Ring, c. 1750
About the Item
Hand carved of vibrant red jadeite, known as konpi, this 18th century archer's ring was likely once worn by a gentleman-scholar in northern China. Traditionally, Chinese archers wore these rings to protect their thumbs while drawing a bowstring. Over time, these jade rings became fashion accessories and a decorative display of status. This stunning jadeite ring, hued with rich crimson currents due to iron oxide deposits, has been recently lined with sterling silver by a contemporary artisan, adding a modern finish and narrowing the interior diameter to ring size 9.5.
