Mid-Century Modern Prints

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Style: Mid-Century Modern
Keiko Minami Signed Large Limited Edition Japanese Etching Print Birds and Reeds
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful and rather whimsical etching by famed Japanese artist Keiko Minami who was known for her pictograph-like aquatints/etchings with a playful, childlike aesthetic. This work features a pair of birds - perhaps herons - sitting serenely in a natural landscape reed-filled body of water as a gentle breeze blows by. The etching is on thick wove paper and is hand-signed and numbered (23/50) in pencil by Keiko along the lower margin. A rather rare image and size. Would make for a great addition to collectors of Minami's work or Japanese / Asian art or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting. Minami had many solo shows including: 1960 Minami Keiko Exhibition, Nichido Gallery 1990 Minami Keiko Exhibition: The World of Fairy Tales in Copperplate Prints, Takaoka Art Museum 2005 Birds, Trees and Girls: The World of Copperplate Poetry: A Memorial Exhibition for Minami Keiko 2011-12 100th Anniversary of Keiko Minami Exhibition — Touring Kyoto, Takaoka, Kichijoji, Sakura, Tatebayashi 2016 Keiko Minami Exhibition: Along with the Work of Ichi Ogawa in the Wind, Musée Hamaguchi Yozo/Yamasa Collection 2017 Keiko Minami Copperplate Exhibition: Holding a Flower Basket, Musée Hamaguchi Yozo/Yamasa Collection 2019 Keiko Minami Exhibition: Koto, Koto. Kotori, Musée Hamaguchi Yozo/Yamasa Collection 2020 Where you can meet delicate colors beyond that tree: Keiko Minami Exhibition, Musée Hamaguchi Yozo/Yamasa Collection 2021 The Fairytale of Lines: Keiko Minami and Copperplate Painters, The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma 2021 Traces of Butterflies: Exhibition Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of Keiko Minami's Birth, Musée Hamaguchi Yozo/Yamasa Collection. Kaoru Kawano Signed Lifetime Edition Japanese Woodblock Print the Big Owl
Located in Studio City, CA
An engaging and quite coveted work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "The Big Owl" Kawano's owl images are some of his most popular works, this one in particular. This print is hand signed in pencil and sealed (in red) by Kawano within the image. This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime print. Prints made and signed by Kawano are becoming harder to find. A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or eye-catching stand-out accent work in about any setting. Frame dimensions: 21.25" high, 16.25" wide, .5" deep Viewable art: 14.5" x 9.5". Please note that the work is framed but there is no glass covering...

1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...

He used the "title face (yellow)" even though this print is more salmon in color. Kinoshita pulled his prints as they were needed, so there is great variation in color within a particular edition.
