About

Artist: Kunifuku Utagawa (fl. 1854-1864) Title: The Picture of Lord Tametomo Attacking a Giant Bird Publisher: Izutsuya Date: 1862 Dimensions: (L) 24.6 x 36.4 (C) 24.5 x 36.2 (R) 24.6 x 36.3 cm In medieval times, the gulf between Mainland Japan and the Okinawan islands was extremely treacherous and vast. Then known as the Ryukyu kingdom, the tropical islands lent themselves to a certain exoticism and lore in the imagination of people from the mainland. One legend that was popularised by the Edo period author Takizawa Bakin (1767–1848) tells how the warrior Minamoto no Tametomo (1139–1170) travelled to the isles after his failure in the Hogen Rebellion. The reigning Taira clan punished him with exile and attempted to cull his ability to wield a bow by mutilating his arms. Kunifuku Utagawa shows a miraculously recovered Tametomo exploring the southern isles. His retinue encounter a large black bear battling a giant bird. On the left panel Tametomo carries with him his legendary oversized bow: he allegedly sank a boat with just one arrow shot causing an entire fleet to withdraw. In a cloud of smoke, the sorcerer Moun Kokushi arises from the head of the bear.
