Japanese Vintage Screen After Hiroshige "Tokaido Road" Byobu 28 Prints

About the Item

This unusual Japanese six-panel Byobu screen with twenty eight (28) authentic and old Hiroshige Tokaido Road series ukiyo-e prints applied on paper, in a symmetric and balanced manner and with a cream colored ground. It dates in the first half of the 20th century. Enticing and unusual subject matter, this simple rendition is skillfully and tastefully rendered on paper. The black lacquered wood perfectly frames this provocative and unusual composition. Tastefully mounted. Overall good condition save for a few blemishes here and there. Dimensions: 55.5 inches high and 112.5 inches wide extended. Photographed in natural light. About the Tokaido Road and Hiroshige The Tokaido road was the most important of the five routes of the Edo period in Japan, connecting Kyoto to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendo, the Tokaido travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name. The fifty-three stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi), is a series of ukiyo-e woodcut prints created by Utagawa Hiroshige after his first travel along the Tokaido in 1832. These landscape prints took full advantage of the new possibilities offered by the Western representation of perspective, that Japanese artists had by now fully assimilated. Hiroshige's series met with full success, not only in Japan, but later in Western countries.
